EYNESBURY Rovers’ prolific attack took their tally to 24 goals in seven matches when they came from behind to beat Rothwell Corinthians 4-1 at home on Saturday.

James Freshwater and Tom Coles struck before half-time and in the second half an own goal put Rovers further ahead before Ben Cole finished off their opponents.

It was a competent display and one that again pleased joint manager Matt Plumb.

“We have picked up since the ON Chenecks defeat and we are looking more like a team now,” he told The Hunts Post.

“Not being big headed, but the players have started doing what Martin Field and I are asking of them. They are finally getting it and finally gelling.

“It’s about the simple things and doing those things right and that is what’s beginning to happen.

“Though saying that, it did take us 20 minutes to get going on Saturday, but as soon as they scored we clicked.”

It was Shaun Morris who got Rothwell’s goal. Elliot Roberts had already had an early chance saved by Andrew Wale, while Andy White had headed a Morris cross over the bar. And Eynesbury lost striker Lee Bassett to a foot injury in the ninth minute, too.

It was while he was receiving treatment that the home side went 1-0 down.

It wasn’t until the 28th minute that Eynesbury created a solid chance – and even then Cole could only shoot over the bar while under pressure from three defenders.

Finally, the equaliser came when Freshwater maintained his goal-a-game record by netting from 25 yards for seven in seven.

Cole was denied by the Rothwell goalkeeper Brad Wilson before Coles beat the offside trap and scored with a delightful chip two minutes before the break.

Early in the second half Rothwell’s Luke Bewers’ attempted clearance ended up sailing over the head of Wilson and into the net.

In the 53rd minute Ben Cole beat his marker before sending a low 20-yard drive beyond the reach of the goalkeeper for number four.

Rothwell rallied but Andy White was denied by a goal line clearance by Darren Woodend, while Andrew Wale was fully extended when he pushed a late White free -kick around a post.

Rovers finished the game strongly but Gavin Batt, David Fisk and Freshwater missed further chances.

“We got the response we wanted after going 1-0 down,” said Plumb, who has added former St Neots Town winger Aaron Greene to his and joint manager Field’s squad this week.

The 18-year-old left Rowley Park after his uncle Dennis Greene left the club during the summer. He has been playing for Biggleswade Town.

“He will add some pace to the squad,” said Plumb. “He’s still young and hopefully we can help him develop and maybe we will be a stepping stone for him.”

On Tuesday night Eynesbury were at St Ives Town and beat their Premier Division rivals on penalties in the first round of the Hinchingbrooke Cup.. That was the first of three cup games on the trot.

That run of games was slightly bugging Plumb when he spoke to the paper on Tuesday afternoon.

“We want to keep the run going because at the end of the season you only look at the league position.

“Don’t get me wrong, we want to be involved in the cups – but we could have done with keeping the league run going.

“But the squad is massively confident at the moment and that’s a great thing.”

Eynesbury: Andrew Wale, Shaun Flack, James Ducket, Robert Ducket, Darren Woodend, Tom Coles (Luke Swain), David Fisk, James Freshwater, Ben Cole (Gavin Batt), Nick Finney, Lee Bassett (Ross West).
