Eynesbury Rovers are just three wins away from promotion to the Premier Division of the United Counties League after they beat Rushden & Higham United 1-0 last night.

And the club has four games in eight days to achieve that feat, one they narrowly missed out on when they finished third behind Sileby Rangers and AFC Rushden & Diamonds last season.

A penalty from top goalscorer Lee Bassett - his 47th goal in all competitions this season and the club’s 100th in the league - was enough to secure the three points in Northamptonshire and with the win came the long-awaited jump from third to second into that all-important second automatic promotion slot behind champions Oadby Town.

As things stand, Eynesbury are now one point ahead of Harrowby United with those four games in eight days remaining. Harrowby only have three games left.

Talking to The Hunts Post after Eynesbury had beaten Bourne Town 2-0 on Saturday, joint manager Martin Field said: “We have just got to keep going and do what we have been doing. I know it’s a little bit boring but what else can I say? I am happy with the position we are in and the boys have answered the questions I asked them recently – it’s all down to us now.”

Bassett scored twice against Bourne and the management – Field and Matt Plumb – will be hoping the striker keeps up his great form in the final games. The first three of those games are all at home, against Woodford United (Saturday), St Neots Town Youth & Saints (Easter Monday) and Raunds Town (Wednesday, April 23), while the last is away at Northampton Spencer (Saturday, April 26).

Harrowby have a tough game against fourth-placed Lutterworth Athletic on Saturday. Should they drop points there, it could be the case that Eynesbury – presuming they had won their eighth game on the spin against strugglers Woodford – could secure promotion with a win in the Easter Monday Huntingdonshire derby against the new Saints. It’s going to be an interesting bank holiday weekend for the club.
