EYNESBURY ROVERS continued their great run of form when they beat Bourne Town 3-1 on Saturday – but they will be disappointed to have conceded their first goal in seven games.

The home side were forced to work hard during a first half that only sparked into life once the floodlights had been switched on.

Eynesbury had been under pressure in the dark against a team they had beaten in the League Cup 5-0 just a week before, but they took the lead when the excellent Ross West found Lee Bassett with a perfect through ball. Bassett used his upper-body strength to beat the remaining defender and lashed the ball home with his left foot.

Bourne equalised in the 40th minute when Jake Mason’s low shot from the edge of the area was deflected past goalkeeper Carl Mackney. It has been 591 minutes since Eynesbury had last conceded a goal.

Two great goals in three minutes won it for the home side. In the 65th minute a long Mackney free kick found Jeremy McMurrough who outpaced his marker before firing the ball low into the far corner of the goal.

Then a Bassett shot took a deflection and fell to Tom Coles who scored with a magnificent strike from the edge of the box.

The manager Paul Dodson was delighted, saying: “In the first half we were sluggish but there were a few words of wisdom and in the second half and we played with a real confidence.

“The two guys in front of the back four work really hard.”

Meanwhile, Lee Blackwell scored four goals in the second half of Huntingdon Town’s impressive 7-0 win at Rothwell Town.

The in-form striker has now scored 11 goals in 12 games this season, but his high-flying side were 3-0 up before he found the net at Cecil Street.

Josh Crick, Declan Rogers and Dan Drane gave Ricky Marheineke’s side a 3-0 lead at the break but the second half was all Blackwell’s.

On 51 minutes he headed home a Rogers corner before meeting another cross, from Ashley Yeomans, six minutes later – and then completing an eight-minute hat trick with a shot from the edge of the box.

A handling error by Rothwell goalkeeper Callum McEachran gifted Blackwell his fourth three minutes from time.

Huntingdon are now third in the United Counties Division One table, just five points behind Bugbrooke St Michaels, who have a game in hand.

“It was our best performance of the season,” said delighted manager Ricky Marheineke.
