East Midlands Winter League Practice Match

EXPLOSIONS, battles and wartime music were some of the features of an unusual fishing match on the Peterborough Nene.

The Forties Day at Wansford impacted on the match, which saw Wayne Swinscoe brave the cold conditions to claim victory.

Swinscoe, fishing on the peg below Stibbington Bridge, started well and caught four good chub in the first 90 minutes which turned out to be enough to win the match.

The commotion, including a pyrotechnic blowing up of the bridge, made conditions somewhat tricky for the remainder of the match.

Simon Godfrey was second and Stan came in third, despite breaking the 12-metre section of his pole.

RESULT: 1 Wayne Swinscoe Van Den Eynde 18lb 2oz, 2 Simon Godfrey Sensas Mark One 12lb 8oz, 3 Stan Binge Browning Stanjay 12lb 1oz, 4 Mick Asker Sensas Mark One 11lb 1oz, 5 Rick Tweddell Sensas Bourne 10lb 1oz.

This week, his weight was boosted by a 17lb 8oz carp which he played for more than 20 minutes through several swims on elastic intended for bream.

It looked for some time as if Stan would tire before the fish but eventually, he landed the specimen and the match win. Ricky Ashwell was second and Steve Ashwell came in third.

ON ARRIVAL in Dolphin Meadow on Sunday, St Ives members were amazed to see frost on the ground instead of the expected dew.

That, combined with a full moon and gin clear water, made things difficult.
