Eaton Socon manager Mark Spavins believes a positional change has been the key to the club’s current success.

Spavins’ side are the form team in the grassroots game after reeling off eight successive victories – six of them in the Kershaw Premier Division. Ben Wilks struck twice as they won 4-2 at Sawston United last Saturday in the latest of those triumphs.

The super streak has arrived since Spavins, in his first season at the helm, turned striker Lewis Gordine-Francis into a defender.

Spavins said: “Lewis scored plenty of goals for me at Great Paxton last season and started off up front again this season.

“But he has played at centre-back in the United Counties League in the past for Stotfold and moving him into that position has really set us off.

“We’ve been able to select the same defence on a regular basis and that has been a huge help.

“We knew there might be a slow start to the season as we were putting together players from three different teams to make one squad, but things have come together very well.”

Eaton Socon’s form has catapulted them up to fifth in the top-flight standings, only seven points off the top, but Spavins has refused to class his red-hot side as title contenders at this stage.

“Ask me that question again at the end of January,” added Spavins. “We’ve got two top teams in Wisbech St Mary and Cambridge City Reserves to play next month and we’ll know more after those games.

“But we would be happy with a top-four finish which would be an amazing achievement in itself in our first season at the club.”

Two Eaton Socon players – goalkeeper Andrew Wale and forward Scott Kingsbury – have featured in the Cambs League representative squad. They recently helped the select side beat the Lancashire Amateur League to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Inter-League Cup.

Eaton Socon have one more fixture to negotiate in December - a trip to struggling Cottenham United this Saturday.

Brampton are another Kershaw Premier Division side in terrific form.

Wayne Ambler’s men pulled six points clear of the drop-zone courtesy of a 3-1 success at Fowlmere last Saturday – an eighth win in 10 games in all competitions.

Top-scorer Danny Cain struck twice to take his seasonal goal tally to 14 before a defensive lapse allowed the hosts to halve their arrears.

But Karl Pickering was on hand to restore the two-goal cushion almost immediately.

Ambler said: “It is a result that really pleases me as not many teams get a win over at Fowlmere.

“The lads are full of confidence and enjoying their football at the moment. That is what winning games does for you.”

Brampton complete their 2015 fixtures with a visit to Gamlingay - a team Ambler describes as ‘land of the giants’ - this Saturday.

Two Andrew Ging goals couldn’t prevent bottom side Hemingfords United going down 6-3 to West Wratting last Saturday.

They could climb off the bottom for Christmas if able to win at Cherry Hinton this Saturday.
