INDOOR bowls might not be the first thing you think of if someone asked you to name a young person's hobby.

But one teenager from St Neots has taken her hobby that little bit further, and is now so good she is representing her country at the sport.

China Egerton, 17, will travel to Arbroath in Scotland next month to represent England in the U25s International Series event.

She has already competed at the World U25 Championships in Guernsey in October, and has finally broken into the national side after a long period of waiting.

Egerton, runner-up in the national women's U25 final last season, has earned her England place at the fifth attempt; she has been trying to achieve her dream since the age of 13.

Angie Green, China's grandmother, said: "China has always dreamed of playing for her country and she is very excited about being selected.

"She phoned me up to let me know straight away but it's funny to think that China will be playing for England!"

Egerton, who is 18 on New Year's Eve, will join team-mates from as far afield as York and the Isle of Wight to represent

England in the two-day event, which will be held at the Arbroath Indoor Bowls Club on January 20/21.

A spokesman for St Neots & District Bowls Club said: "We were delighted to hear that China has been selected to represent England and we offer her our congratulations and wish her the very best of luck."

n St Neots & District Indoor Bowls Club ladies have made progress in two regional tournaments. The ladies are through to the zone final of the Mason Trophy and saw off Wisbech to move into the next round of the Yetton Trophy.

n The club's men have progressed in the Denny Cup with a victory against Sudbury. The team are now in the final 16 of this high-profile nationwide tournament and face North Walsham in the next round.
