BEING back to near full-strength meant Town were able to put in a much-improved performance to take second position.

Town strung five across the midfield and produced some impressive football against their struggling opponents in manager Darren Young's absence.

Assistant manager Jim McBride said: "Playing five in midfield helped us put pressure on the United back three and as a result we dominated for most of the game and in the process scored some really classy goals."

Huntingdon bossed the game from the off and it took James Edwards less than 10 minutes to score the first of his two goals, fed by Michael Duroe, before Alyou Coaney made it two with a well-worked goal.

The visitors were, at this point, almost untouchable and Chris Caswell got in on the act with a contender for goal of the season - a bicycle kick from a corner.

With the first period drawing to a close Town were guilty of relaxing and allowed a speculative lob to beat the defence for Irchester to score.

A few choice words by McBride during the interval refocused Town and Coaney quickly restored the three-goal advantage with a close range effort.

Irchester were then allowed back into the match. Town defender Mark Hackett was left flat footed and had to resort to a pull on an attacker's shirt which resulted in United scoring from the penalty, before the home side reduced the deficit to one with another good strike.

It was left to Edwards to have the final word when he picked up a ball 60 yards from goal, skipping past two tackles and firing in from 18 yards.

McBride said: "We should have won a little more comfortably - they caught us dozing on two occasions and we paid the price both times.

"The next two league games are back to back matches against Whitworths, who are one of our main contenders and we have to make sure these lapses don't occur again."

# Town were in League Cup action at St Ives last night (Tuesday), travel to Whitworths on Saturday and go to Ely City next Tuesday in the Hunts Premier Cup.
