Ten-man Eaton Socon saw their 10-game winning spree come to an end – but boss Mark Spavins was thrilled by a battling Cambs League point last Saturday.

Socon overcame the harsh dismissal of Neil Morris on the hour to draw 0-0 at Linton Granta in the Kershaw Premier Division.

Goalkeeper Andrew Wale made two fine saves and defender Lewis Gordine-Francis produced a fine goal-line clearance before the title-chasers almost snatched victory when Ryan Whittingham was denied late on.

Spavins said: “After winning 10 games in a row, I wondered how the lads would respond when they found themselves with their backs to the wall.

“That certainly happened on Saturday when we had a player sent off for a challenge that should never have been a red card.

“No one could believe the decision – even the opposition manager had his head in his hands!

“But our lads responded superbly. They rolled their sleeves up, grew a foot taller and could even have nicked all three points.

“We could have gone second with a win, but the draw takes us to within three points of the top of the table so things are going well.”

Eaton Socon turn their attention to a big Hunts Intermediate Cup semi-final against top-flight rivals Brampton this Saturday.

Brampton go into that game on a losing note after goals from George Cresswell and Nick Garner were unable to prevent a 4-2

Warboys Town host Eynesbury Rovers’ Under 21 side in the other semi-final at Forge Way.

Peterborough & District League side Warboys were the highest local scorers last weekend when roaring to their biggest win of the campaign.

Striker Chae Simons made an explosive debut with eight goals as Peterborough outfit ICA Sports Reserves were thumped 11-1 in Division One.

John Teti, Sam Latchford and Matt Duncan joined Simons, who usually plays for St Ives Town, on the scoresheet.
