HAVE you nominated your sports hero yet? If not, do it now because time is running out and the big day is fast approaching.

This year’s Coversure Hunts Post Sports Awards will be hosted by Hinchingbrooke House Performing Arts on Sunday July 29 and the sponsors are still looking for more nominations with nine categories to be shortlisted.

Last year, the awards evening was held at St Neots Town Football Club, and the Saints manager Dennis Greene was named Coach of the Year. The club’s first team was named the senior team of the year after winning promotion from the United Counties League into the Southern League. This season they won promotion again – will they get the nod ahead of United Counties Division One champions Huntingdon Town or Eastern Counties title winners Godmanchester Rovers?

Of course, it’s all about individuals as well as teams – with swimmer Lauren Steadman, who will take part in the London 2012 Paralympics in August, picking up last year’s Outstanding Achievement for an athlete with a disability award, and Alan Hannibal honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award for his work with the BRJ Road Running Club.

Other awards being presented this year will be Sports Personality, Team of the Year (junior), Unsung Hero, School of the Year Outstanding Achievement (over-18) and Outstanding Achievement (under-18). Thomas Birch from sponsors Coversure – who also back The Hunts Post’s monthly Unsung Hero award – said: “This is one of the best nights of the year for sports men and women in the Huntingdonshire region.

“We are looking forward to meeting some outstanding people again this year.”

Andy Veale, editor of The Hunts Post said: “Last year was a fantastic night and we are all looking forward to honouring the region’s hardest working sports people again.

“Sometimes people involved in grassroots sport don’t get the plaudits they deserve and it is on nights like these that we get to put that right.”
