Welcome to the first Angling with Stan & Fizz of 2007. Firstly, may we wish all our readers and anglers all the best for the forthcoming 12 months. Our thoughts are especially with the families of the anglers who we have lost during 2006, for whom this festive time of year is particularly difficult. Stanjay Raveley Christmas series The second match of the series was fished on December 27, and this time the pegs in the wides did not produce the winning weight. It was the Browning Hotrods pair of Martin Caldecote and Tim Nash who took the top two places with 15lb 12oz and 14lb 1oz respectively. Brampton's Paul Irons was a close third and Mark One's Simon Godfrey fourth. RESULT: 1 Martin Caldecote Browning Hotrods 15lb 12oz, 2 Tim Nash Browning Hotrods 14lb 1oz, 3 Paul Irons Brampton 13lb 15.5oz, 4 Simon Godfrey Mark One 12lb After two matches Jon Hazelden was leading in the series with two section wins from four anglers all with one win and one second - Tim Nash, Martin Caldecote, Dave Thornton and Steve Gordon. Hazelden, whose fishing life has been eventful to say the least this autumn, was in the news again fishing on the town Welland on the Saturday before Christmas. He dropped one of his large pole sections into the drink. Undeterred by the fact that he was fishing next to the busiest bridge for shoppers on one of the busiest days of the year he stripped to his underwear and successfully dived for the section. The final match on New Year's Eve saw the drain the colour of weak, cold tea and rushing through after torrential rain on Saturday. The top two weights came from the pegs in the wides with RAF colleagues Graham Welton and Craig Shaw finishing first and second. Jon Hazelden was third from the other end - peg 29 was assisted by the angler drawn on peg 30 not fishing. Hazelden won the series with an unbeatable three section wins with Martin Caldecote second with two wins and one second. RESULT: 1 Graham Welton RAF 7lb 12oz, 2 Craig Shaw RAF 4lb 6oz, 3 Jon Hazelden VDE Stanjay MG 2lb 14.5oz, 4 Martin Caldecote Browning Hotrods 2lb 11oz Stanjay Tackle Christmas match The Lock Cut provided reasonable weights for most of the anglers present, with Paul Irons the winner just ahead of Stan while Tony McGregor got the best of a close contest for third place. After the match there was a Christmas Prize Draw and refreshments at the shop. RESULT: 1 Paul Irons Brampton 7lb 1oz, 2 Stan Binge VDE Stanjay MG 6lb 10oz, 3 Tony McGregor VDE Stanjay MG 3lb 8.5oz, 4 Lindsay Naylor Browning Hotrods 3lb 2oz Saturday Open - December 30 The weather was awful for the majority of the match with torrential rain and near darkness. Stan, suffering from a cold, definitely made the correct decision by not fishing. Steve Gordon, drawn next to the Chinese Bridge which was also the Golden Peg, was the winner with 5lb 6oz of perch and roach. Brampton's Paul Irons was second from next door with 4lb 15oz and Image's Steve Clarke was third just a further four ounces behind. RESULT: 1 Steve Gordon VDE Stanjay MG 5lb 6oz, 2 Paul Irons Brampton 4lb 15oz, 3 Steve Clarke Image 4lb 11oz, 4 Trevor Oakman VDE Stanjay MG 3lb 13oz Cromwell Lake Saturday's match saw a win for Ricky Ashwell with 38lb 1oz, Graham Gooddraw took second with 31lb 8oz and John Pratt claimed third. Charlie Pratt took the small fish prize with 2lb 8oz. RESULT: 1 Ricky Ashwell St Neots 38lb 1oz, 2 Graham Gooddraw Brampton 31lb 8oz, 3 John Pratt Gt Paxton 23lb 8oz Ramsey AS There was only one weight below 6lb in Thursday's sweepstake on Factory Bank which was won by Andrew Kilby with 14lb 4oz. RESULT: 1 Andrew Kilby 14lb 4oz, 2 Pete Kirlew 12lb 4oz, 3 Duncan Folkes 9lb 3oz Sunday's match was also scheduled for Factory Bank but the torrential rain of Saturday made it unfishable but a move to Ramsey St Mary's saw anglers averaging nearly 15lb each. The winner was Paul Kilby from the Golden Peg (again) with six tench and eight pounds of bits for 29lb 13oz. RESULT: 1 Paul Kilby 29lb 13oz, 2 Duncan Folkes 17lb 9oz, 3 Keith Rayment 9lb 4oz.
