St Ives Roosters started the new Eastern Premier Division season in exactly the same way they ended the old one.

The local lads bashed Bedford Tigers – the same team they had seen off to win the 2014 Grand Final – to hit the ground running.

Stefan Gallucci led the charge with four tries in a 38-16 triumph at California Road.

New recruit James Hodgson, man-of-the-match Aaron Throne, Josh Meadows and Adam Peel also went over with player-coach Paul Ashbridge landing three conversions.

Ashbridge said: “There were a hell of a lot of good individual performances, but most importantly we played well as a unit.

“We’ve got a few things to concentrate on in training, but the desire and the will to win which we displayed in this game give us a strong platform to build on.”

Roosters are back on home turf again this Saturday when they entertain the King’s Lynn Black Knights (3pm).
