The Hunts AC under-13 girls’ relay quartet stormed to victory at the Diamond League meeting at Birmingham’s International Alexander Stadium on Sunday.

The talented 4x100m team – known as the Hunts Hurricanes - lived up to high expectations by breaking their own club record and personal best by 1.43 seconds to record a blistering 54.37 seconds leaving the likes of Birchfield Harriers and Coventry Godiva – recognised as two of the country’s leading lights in women’s athletics - trailing in their wake.

Club coach Richard Hart said: “It’s a fairytale dream come true when you take a group of small town girls to the bright lights of a big international event and win.

“We worked very hard in training three weeks up to the event assimilating some complex techniques used at international level. On the day, the girls pervaded a very confident and professional approach in the warm-up area beforehand, held their nerve under pressure and executed a very good race.”

Sawtry’s Daisy Coulson-Bascombe opened strongly with an excellent bend before handing on to Morgan Smith. The Chatteris flyer powered down the back straight in front of the Hunts AC band of supporters so that, at halfway, Hunts were in the mix with three or four other teams.

Then came the decisive break as much-improved Macy Taylor, from Somersham, tore round the tight lane two, third leg bend to take the team into a five-metre lead.

From there, Haddenham’s Lizzy Harrison was away and extended the lead to eight metres at the tape over Rugby and Northampton AC.

The girls were awarded a £250 winners’ cheque to take home to Huntingdon. Afterwards, the girls rejoined their families in the stands to enjoy watching 19 world champions take part, including all eight members of the GB men’s and women’s relay squads.

Coach Hart is looking forward to the opportunity of the girls going even faster and, with the East Anglian League final coming up on September 17, is eyeing a GB top-10 ranking time.

“So long as the girls continue training hard with a positive attitude, this is just the start, but what a start,” he said.

“We ran a hand-timed 53.6 in training last week and I see room for improvement on a couple of our changes. The girls are keen to keep up their regime of two-to-three sessions a week so I think a low 53-second clocking is in range.”
