Luke Gilbert starred recently while winning the English Pool Association Under 16 National Grand Prix crown and practice partner Dom Cooney also enjoyed success as he took the honours in the Under 23 age bracket. Sixteen year-old Gilbert, who is the captain of the Cambridgeshire county youth side, has also had trials for the full England team in two of the past three years. And Gilbert is not just a top pool player he also excels at snooker and recently enjoyed his first success on the English Association of Snooker and Billiards Under 20 Junior Tour. Gilbert now sits top of the regional South East rankings and hopes to earn promotion to the Junior Premier League in the future. He also won the East Anglian Under 18 six-red snooker tournament earlier this year as well as skippering a Cambridgeshire side to win the Jock McGregor Trophy. Gilbert, sponsored by Giggs and Co estate agents, Kypol Electroplating and the 147 Snooker Club, has also beaten considerably older and more experienced players to win the Tony Mitchell Singles Competition an event open to anyone who plays in the Cambridge Snooker League. Cooney (22) devotes his focus to pool and has been rewarded by receiving international honours. He is an England Under 23 international and a regular competitor at all the big tournaments around the country. He recently helped his Cambridge-based team to finish as runners-up in the Champion of Champions finals an event which sees 128 pub teams from around the country battle for glory.
