Godmanchester (87-5) beat Norwich (84) by 5 wkts

A STARRING performance from captain Bevin Moynan was the highlight of a win on the opening day of the EAPL season for Godmanchester.

Moynan returned his best bowling figures for two seasons with a haul of 5-19 from 17 overs as the home side collapsed in a dramatic fashion, losing five wickets for just 16 runs in their middle order as they fell for a paltry 84 all out.

Returning Sri Lankan star Praneeth Jayasundera weighed in with 3-27 for Goddy but some less than impressive batting from his side almost cost them.

In the end, determined batting by Matt Pateman and Jayasundera was needed to amass the modest total needed for victory.

Moynan's first seven overs yielded just two runs as he tore into the home line-up and with Jayasundera claiming three LBWs, Godmanchester were always on top.

Goddy's top order scarcely troubled the scorers and is was Pateman (27) and the newly-wed Sri Lankan (29) who saw their side home.

National Village Cup

HORSEHEATH skipper Gary Ellis led from the front in his side's 19-run win at Upwood in the npower Village Cup on Sunday.

Former test stars Alec Stewart and Dean Headley were in attendance at the game as ambassadors for the sponsors but it will have been the visitors from the east of Cambridgeshire that most impressed the ex-England men.

For Upwood, Neil Tuffin (4-29) and Nick Page (3-27) bowled with penetration and economy and the reply was based around Steven Tuffin's 40 and James Milner 27, but they fell short of the required total to be bowled out in the penultimate over of the innings.

The home side were grateful to Australian Miles Cordeux (38) and number 11 Terry Hayden (4) who scored the winning runs.

Eaton Socon earned their first ever win at this level against a poor Castor and Ailsworth side. Socon amassed 172-6 thanks to Matt Rawling (42) and the in-form Jon Carpenter (41). Carpenter then grabbed two wickets in the first over and Castor slumped to 30-5. Az Nawaz, who ended with 5-21, destroyed the fragile batting to see Socon home by 72 runs.

Bluntisham fell to a 10-wicket defeat against Foxton.

Hunts League 1

THE new campaign started badly for Huntingdon at Newborough with a five-wicket defeat. At 134-4 they looked well placed, but collapsed to 142 all out with Navid Mohammed (43) and Fred Khan (32) being the dominant batsmen.

A HARD-FOUGHT game saw Buckden begin their season with a win against Warboys . Struggling at 70-6 due to some tight bowling, it needed a battling partnership between Andrew Bonafont (51*) and Steve Cox (18) to see Buckden to a respectable total of 155 all out.

Warboys began their reply steadily but found it hard work and were always behind the rate. Solid bowling restricted them to 145-6 from 47 overs.

Warboys II had two youngsters to thank for their total of 197-4 against Sawtry II . Ryan Humpheys (59) and Matt Duncan (54*) scored their maiden half centuries to set up an 80-run victory. In reply, Sawtry couldn't get to grips with the bowling of Martin Croucher (6-37) and only Sam O'Connell (29) made any headway.

Alconbury dismissed Hilton for just 65 runs and knocked them off comfortably but it will be a game that Roland Amft will hope to forget as he repeated his feat of 10 years ago by dropping four catches in a game - last time out it was Hunts Post reporter Dave Woods who had the misfortune the be the much-dropped bowler.

Elsewhere, Sawtry II lost to Warboys II on Saturday and fared little better when they were beaten on Sunday by Hampton.
