One of the driving forces behind the successful rebirth of Hemingford Park CC in recent years has received a national honour.
Chairman Tim Chambers won the Heartbeat of the Club accolade at the Natwest Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards – a gong he received from England star Stuart Broad and respected broadcaster Jonathan Agnew at Lord’s last week.
Hard-working Chambers’ many other roles at the village club include fixture secretary, umpire, groundsman, store keeper, junior lead coach, school liaison officer, financial controller, fundraiser and occasional senior player.
He first became involved as a parent of a player when a team for children aged between seven and nine was formed four years ago.
And that proved to be the start of a new era for Hemingord Park as the club now boasts a senior side and junior sides at Under 9, 11 and 13 levels.
And Chambers insists the award is recognition for all those who have helped put Hemingford Park back on the local cricket map.
He said: “Unknowingly, I was entered for the Huntingdonshire area Natwest OSCA’s and the English Cricket Board then selected me as a national finalist.
“I’m humbled and honoured to win the award. It is recognition for the efforts of all those who are involved in cricket at Hemingford Park.
“We have a number of parental volunteers who fill the many necessary roles from managing teams to making teas.
“I’m particularly pleased that every year new parents become involved in the club and ensure we continue to have enjoyable and successful seasons.”
Along with the ‘OSCA’, Chambers was also presented with a signed England cricket top and bat which will take pride of place in the Hemingford Park pavilion.
The club have secured sponsorship from the Hemingford Sports Academy Community Interest Company for the next three years which will help to finance coaching and training kit.
Hemingford Park are also currently fundraising as they attempt to purchase permanent training nets.
And Chambers is keen to hear from any prospective new playing members or volunteers.
