Mark Edwards was the Ramsey match-winner on a dramatic afternoon of Cambs & Hunts Premier League cricket - despite being injured in the warm-up.

Edwards suffered an ankle problem which prevented him from leading the Ramsey attack in their Whiting & Partners Division One clash against Waresley.

But, with their Cricketfield Lane unbeaten record under serious threat, Edwards was the hero with the bat as he thumped an unbeaten 33 off just 21 balls to guide his side to a one-wicket victory with one ball to spare.

Edwards cracked three successive boundaries following two dot balls in a final over from which Ramsey needed 10 runs to win and eclipse Waresley’s posting of 252-9.

“It’s a massive result for us,” admitted Ramsey captain Michael Cafferkey. “We were ticking along quite nicely at one stage with a couple of decent partnerships at the top of the order, but we then lost wickets which left us up against it.

“Mark didn’t bowl after injuring his ankle, but he is a decent batsman and showed that by getting us over the line. He hit two fours in the penultimate over and another three in the last over.

“Hopefully his injury is not too serious. Even if he can’t bowl, he’ll probably still sneak into the team as a batsman!”

Taylor West (3-56) and Smith (3-61) were the pick of the Ramsey players with the ball against Waresley. Captain Cafferkey also claimed a couple of wickets.

Aussie ace Jack Anglberger continued a fine run of form when top-scoring for Waresley with 70. Josh Smith (54) also hit a half-century for the visitors.

Ramsey opener Ryan Smith is another man from Down Under in decent nick at the moment.

He contributed 69 to register a half-century for the second successive match to set Ramsey’s reply off to a solid start, but his departure (one of four victims for Chetan Chauhan) then led to a series of wickets falling as they went from the relative comfort of 123-2 to struggling on 195-8.

James Markland kept them moving in the right direction with an impressive 49 before falling to the first ball of the penultimate over, but Edwards, aided by last man Rhys Abraham, ensured Ramsey prevailed.

Ramsey sit 50 points behind unbeaten leaders Ketton at the halfway stage of the season. A maximum of 30 points are on offer for a victory in this competition. Bottom side St Ives could certainly use plenty of points after another defeat yesterday.

Tom McCarthy’s second five-wicket haul of the summer was not enough to prevent them falling to a 138-run reverse against Saffron Walden.

His 5-36 exploits did restrict the visitors to 230-8 but St Ives were removed for just 92 in reply with only opener Umair Tariq (33) provided a noteworthy contribution.

St Ives are now 33 points from safety after fellow strugglers Histon triumphed against locals Eaton Socon.

A patient half-century from captain Jonny Carpenter (56) and a speedier 47 from Matt Pateman were the most sizable contributions as Eaton Socon posted 170, but that tally was eclipsed by the hosts.

Godmanchester Town collected victory in a run-fest at March.

Muhammad Raheel (75), Paul Swannell (62) and Tariq Aziz (61) all hit half-centuries as they piled up 306-7 before Amit Gupta bagged 4-60 as March were dismissed for 294 with an over to go.
