Captain Josh Burgess played a starring role as Sawtry moved to within touching distance of clinching Hunts League promotion last Saturday.
Burgess top-scored with 86 as the Division Three table-toppers triumphed by 19 runs at Upwood – an outcome which dented their hosts’ own hopes of going up.
The skipper’s biggest contribution of the campaign helped Sawtry post a useful 212-7 before they removed the home side for 193.
Sawtry now need only 17 points from their three remaining fixtures to be certain of promotion and they could seal the deal this weekend when again facing Upwood, who are now 21 points behind second-placed Biggleswade, who slammed another local side, Ramsey 3rds, by nine wickets last Saturday.
Huntingdon & District 2nds were also beaten at this level with a Saqib Riaz half-century not enough to prevent a 92-run reverse at Orton Park 2nds.
Jonathan Mews impressed with bat and ball as Buckden won an all-local affair in Division Two.
Mews followed up an innings of 57 with a return of 4-25 in a 97-run triumph against Houghton & Wyton. His boundary-laden knock of 57 helped Buckden reach 214-8 before the visitors were dismissed for 117 with Matt Chester (4-19) also in fine form.
Chester proved he can bat a bit as well the following day when hitting 112 (a first century in senior cricket) for the club’s Sunday side in a 40-run Division Five defeat against Godmanchester Town 3rds.
It was a match of two tons as Godmanchester man Landon racked up an unbeaten 155 – the Kiwi’s fourth century of the summer at this level.
Back in Division Two, Godmanchester Town 2nds came up agonisingly short when going down by one run at Blunham 2nds. Jim Lunn took 4-24 as the hosts were dismissed for 187, but it proved a tally just beyond his side. Captain Steve Marsh hit 69 for the Town team with Lunn adding 41.
There was another thriller in Division One as Eaton Socon 2nds prevailed at AK XI by one wicket.Ryan Worboys blasted a boundary to settle the issue with his side scraping past their Peterborough hosts’ effort of 161.
Stuart Henderson celebrated a first century for Brampton as his 107no helped them to a 47-run Division Four success against Blunham 3rds.
