A bunch of Hunts AC stars have booked their places in the Anglian Schools Championships this Saturday after impressing at county level.

The local contingent secured their qualification with fine performances at the Cambridgeshire Schools Championships last Saturday.

And no-one was more impressive than Harriet Bruce as she claimed a thrilling Junior Girls long jump success by the smallest of margins.

Bruce produced a big personal best leap of 4.41m to lead through the first two rounds of the competition only to be pushed down to second by a 4.44m effort of an opponent in the final round.

But Bruce saved her best until last to respond with a 4.45m jump to snatch victory by a single centimetre.

Sprint star Owen King was again in scorching form as he completed a 100m and 200m double in the Intermediate Boys bracket. He clocked 11.1 seconds for the shorter distance and then eased 15m clear in the longer race to take victory in 22.8.

King’s training partner Owain Collard also got in on the winning act with a 400m success in the Senior Boys section. He produced a useful time of 51.7 despite having to battle strong winds.

Other sprint success came from Jasmine Hope in the Junior Girls 100m race with a time of 12.9 while Katie Wright was in fine form over further as she won the 800m in the same category in 2:32.5 – a personal best of more than three seconds. Charlie Batterbee easily won the Intermediate Girls hammer with 42.72m

Three other athletes gained Anglian qualifying spots after runners-up finishes. Shannon Flockhart was within a whisker of a personal best when second in the Junior Girls 1500m while Joey Croft occupied the same position over the same distance at Intermediate Boys level.

Mia Fairbrother-Burton also advances after being pipped to Junior Girls hammer glory by four centimetres although her best throw of 23.16 was a personal best of more than two metres.

They will now represent Cambridgeshire at the Embankment Track in Peterborough this Saturday.

Hunts AC athletes to miss out on Anglian Schools spots despite good displays were Ryan Boden, Aleta Fraylich, Frannie Chapman and Matt Gough.
