AROUND 300 young athletes took to the track and field at the St Ivo Leisure Centre last Wednesday for the County Schools Sportshall Athletics event.

Spilt into two events and age categories, Great Paxton and Westfield from Hunts were competing alongside three other schools from Cambs and Peterborough in the Year 5/6 group.

There were six track and six field events for each of the boys and girls, with scores from all competitors combined to formulate an overall team result.

Westfield placed joint third with Great Paxton in fifth behind consistent Cottenham, who won 13 of the 24 events to take the title.

Next up was the Year 7 finals, with hosts St Ivo School narrowly missing out in the boys’ event to Stanground College while in the girls’ event, winners Witchford then also edged Ivo into second place.

Competition manager Ryan Armes said: “The atmosphere was electric and it was great to see so many schools and young people taking part, in the first schools event of its kind.”
