TEENAGE golfer Connor Haynes has written his name into the history books of St Neots Golf Club by becoming the youngest player ever to win the Club and Junior Championships in the same season.

The 16-year-old Sharnbrook Upper School pupil has enjoyed a fantastic year on the fairways, winning countless club and county honours and representing Cambridgeshire at both the under-16 and under-18 levels.

Haynes, who lives in Tilbrook near Kimbolton, started playing golf when he was 10, and has been a junior member at St Neots – Cambridgeshire’s oldest golf club – for the past five years, honing his skills under the watchful eye of director of golf Paul Toyer.

“It is a tremendous achievement by Connor to hold both the Club and Junior Championship,” said Toyer. “It is a feat that has only been achieved by one other person over the club’s 121-year history.

“Connor has a tremendous golf swing and the mentality to be very successful in the game. Despite only playing for six years he has already reduced his handicap to 3.6 and is certainly capable of getting it lower and who knows, maybe he’ll become a professional one day.”

Haynes needed a play-off to be crowned Club Champion, having tied with 21-year-old James Bradford – another graduate from the club’s junior ranks – after two rounds. However, the younger man held his nerve to claim the club’s top honour at the second extra hole on the course designed by the legendary Harry Vardon.
