BOXING: Claiming Commonwealth glory is the first towards the world stage for Jordan Gill

The Chatteris featherweight star extended his unbeaten record to 21 fights with a quickfire demolition of David Berna last weekend.

Gill stopped his Hungarian opponent in just one minute and 52 seconds at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff.

As reported by the Cambs Times last week, his success has secured a Commonwealth title shot later this year.

Gill will face Ryan Doyle for the belt in London on October 27 with the winner of that fight then going on to challenge for British glory in 2019.

The British belt is currently held by Norfolk fighter Ryan Walsh, who defends against Isaac Lowe in October.

Gill said: “There are some top names domestically at featherweight and it’s great to know I’m going to be fighting them in the next few months.

“It is going to be a very hard fight against Doyle. I respect his ability and his power, but I’ll focus on doing what I do.

“I’ve let my boxing do the talking and I’ve earned the right to be in big fights.

“Not many boxers – especially from this area - ever win major titles and it would be a huge achievement.

My plan is to win the Commonwealth belt, go on to win the British title and then prove myself on the world stage.

“I’m becoming a man and there is no doubt the best is still to come from me.”

Gill has flourished since a switch to Dave Coldwell stable last year and he is clearly held in high regard by his trainer.

Coldwell said: “Jordan has sparred with some top, top names and has learned from that.

“He has the skills and it is all about getting him settled. Jordan can potentially get to world level with the ability he has.”
