A CUT eye sustained by Canvey boxer Sean Boshell gave St Ives’ Bradley Chapman a second round victory in their Eastern Counties ABA Championship finals bout at Deeping on Saturday.

Chapman had his opponent breathing heavily after the first round and then he took advantage in the second, landing some heavy right crosses and, on the verge of getting stopped, Boshell’s corner pulled him out.

Ives coach Steve Whitwell said: “I don’t think the cut was bad enough to stop the fight, but it was only a matter of time before he would have been stopped anyway, so they probably did the right thing.”

Chapman now advances to the national zone final this weekend when he fights Tom Watson of Golden Ring ABC Southampton at King‘s Lynn.

In other club action, Tom Martin boxed in Hertford and avenged an earlier defeat this season against Brian McDonaugh from Hoddesdon on a majority decision, to set himself up nicely for the Eastern Counties Junior ABA Championships in King’s Lynn this weekend.

Also in Hertford, Dan Meston was narrowly edged out by the more experienced Norwich’s James Collins on points, but coach Whitwell said: “Meston gained nothing but praise from all watching and I don’t think there is anyone in the country, under ten bouts, who would beat Collins right now.”

> CAMPOL’S Scott Allen, 12, narrowly lost out on points against home fighter Robin Gittins in their three-rounder at Tenbury Wells.

On the Hinchingbrooke School pupil’s performance, coach Mick Taylor said: “It was a very close, competitive bout and there were some good clean punches coming from Scott, where as Gittins was quite wild and flailing his arms.

“To our frustration, he got the nod on a points decision, but it was the best performance that Scott has put in to date.”
