SURPRISE WIN: Emma Butcher, striped gloves, won the U20 Women's title.

HUNTINGDONSHIRE runners brushed off the snow and ice to claim a host of wins at the Cambridgeshire County Cross Country Championships at Priory Park on Sunday.

One of the performances of the weekend came from Riverside Runners' Carla Humphrey, who won the U13 Girls race by 11 seconds in a time of 12mins 18secs, clocking a time six seconds faster than the winner of the U13 Boys race.

Humphrey said she had not expected to run so well as this season she has been concentrating on her football commitments in the Arsenal Ladies youth set-up.

Riverside Runners enjoyed a winning weekend, as Catherine Hemingway started the gold rush in the U11 Girls race, Alan Turnbull won the Men's O40 race for the fourth year in a row, Andy Boast took the Men's O50 title, and Tracey Patmore was the top Ladies O35 runner.

The developing Riverside seniors and veteran men's team won gold, and the Riverside women took home the bronze team medal.

Unheralded 17-year-old Emma Butcher of Huntingdonshire AC surprised the packed field to lift the U20 Women's title, storming to a 38-second win in the treacherous conditions.

In the U11 Girls race Hunts AC runners Amelia Darnell, Charlotte Smith, and Hannah Curtis all finished in the top ten, winning the team a bronze medal. The Veteran Men's race also yielded a bronze thanks to the efforts of Wayne Gimblett, Sean Barker and Shane Hunt, who added an individual bronze in M50 race.

Julia McIntosh won the silver in the W45 category and Bob Hudson finished fourth in the M60 race.

Suzi Boast from St Neots, running for Bedford and County, led home the Senior Women's field, while Hartford's Jacob Wisbey was the winner in the U17 Men's event in the colours of Peterborough AC.

The selections for the CAU Inter-counties Team Cross Country Championships in March were also made, with the race winners being joined by Katie Scholey, James Downing, Sammie Skinner and Dave Connell of Hunts AC.
