Matt Duncan is determined to ensure Warboys dodge the dreaded Tucker Gardner League Division One drop.

Duncan has inherited the captaincy at Forge Way after previous skipper Leighton Gilbert opted to return to former club Ramsey a couple of weeks ago - in the process swapping a basement battle for a title challenge.

Gilbert has left behind a Warboys side starved of runs. They remain in the bottom two following a 119-run defeat at Burwell 2nds on Saturday.

And life is not about to get any easier with table-topping Wisbech set to visit this Saturday.

Duncan, who had served as vice-captain, said: “We always knew it was going to be a tough season and surviving at this level was the target from day one. Nothing has changed in that regard.

“We’ve been seriously short of runs all summer, but it is a case of rallying the troops and battling on.

“We’re all local lads and we’ll stick together to try to stay up.

“It doesn’t help that we’ve got Wisbech and Godmanchester on the next two Saturdays with a few players away though.”

Gilbert is not the only departure from Warboys this summer - overseas player Simon Walshe’s stay was cut short. The Australian was deemed not up to the demands of Division One cricket.

One Warboys batsman among the runs is second-team opener Ryan Humphrey. He hit a sparkling unbeaten 140 - his first competitive century in senior cricket - to help his side to a two-wicket success at Huntingdon & District 2nds in Hunts Division Three on Saturday.

The hosts had amassed 242-8 with Umar Habib cracking an unbeaten 60 and opener Waqas Mahmud adding 59 while Warboys captain Matt Lavender bagged three wickets.

But Humphrey batted throughout Warboys’ reply as they clinched victory with two-and-a-half overs to spare.

It was also a good day for Warboys 3rds as they breezed to a six-wicket triumph against Peterborough side Orton Park in Division Four as Adam Bird took 4-35.
