Captain Martin Burton admits Huntingdon & District face a crucial run of fixtures in their Tucker Gardner League Division Two survival bid.

The town side have dropped into the relegation zone during a run of six successive defeats which continued when they came up 12 runs short at Cambridge Granta 2nds last Saturday.

And while Burton insists his men can have no complaints about their current predicament following a run of poor performances, he is backing them to climb out of their slump during a run of must-win games.

They host the two teams below them in the bottom three and the one side immediately above the danger-zone over the next three weekends.

That run starts with the visit of Sawston & Babraham to St Peters Road tomorrow.

Burton said: “We fully deserve to be in the bottom three given our recent form and we will find it very tough to avoid relegation if we don’t learn to keep a cool head when chasing.

“We were 105-5 at Granta last Saturday and in a very good position in pursuit of 134, but we ended up collapsing to 122 all out.

“We’ve chucked a few wins away this season and that was another one as we failed to perform with the bat after bowling and fielding superbly.

“I did fear during the winter that we might be a couple of experienced batsmen short and that is proving to be the case.

“We’ve got to get ourselves out of this losing run and the next three games are massive.

“I’m positive we will turn it around and avoid the drop, but it will be tight and a few of us need to get in form fast.”

Faisal Javed top-scored with 68 for Huntingdon & District last Saturday after earlier picking up three wickets.

Burton’s men are only a point behind Warboys, who sit one place above the relegation zone.

Warboys were beaten by five wickets at Kimbolton last Saturday after overcoming the same opponents a week earlier.

Liam Gaynor top-scored with 35 as Warboys were removed for 146 – a tally their hosts comfortably passed as South African ace Ruben Claaseen finished unbeaten on 65.

Warboys have a good chance to ease their relegation fears when hosting bottom side Weston Colville tomorrow while Kimbolton go to leaders St Ives.
