Brampton began the new year with a bang by knocking the Kershaw Premier Division table-toppers off their perch.

Wayne Ambler’s men came from behind to claim a 2-1 success at title-chasing Fulbourn Institute in the Cambs League top-flight last Saturday.

Top-scorer Danny Cain was a key figure as Brampton turned a deficit into advantage. He earned the free-kick from which Gareth Owens levelled before firing the winner himself.

Boss Wayne Ambler said: “It is our best result of the season and it came thanks to a really good team performance.

“Looking at how the other results went, with so many teams at the bottom end of the table winning, it was a victory we really needed as well.”

“I could tell from watching the warm up that Fulbourn were a really good side and the job only got tougher when we fell behind, but we came back at them really well to get in front.

“Fulbourn did hit the bar and post, but we played well enough to get that bit of luck. My two central defenders, Aaron Wootton and Sam Miles, were outstanding while George Cresswell must have covered every blade of grass in midfield.”

Brampton are four points clear of the relegation zone while fellow locals Hemingfords continued their attempt to escape the clutches of relegation by slamming Cambridge City Reserves 7-0.

Substitute Arran Mackay climbed off the bench to hit a hat-trick in the final half-an-hour although two Lionel Farrell goals and strikes from Andy Ging and Tom Howard already had the match won by then.

“It was the best performance from a Hemingfords team in the three seasons I’ve either watched them or been involved,” said joint-boss John Hughes.

“We were brilliant all over the pitch and it was great to follow up one win with another.”

Hemingfords stay second-bottom but are now within a point of safety ahead of a basement showdown against Foxton this Saturday.

Eaton Socon powered to within four points of top spot after recording a 10th successive victory in all competitions.

A flurry of second-half goals earned a 3-2 success at Gamlingay which lifted Mark Spavins’ side into third place. Ben Wilks’ brace sandwiched a Josh Spavins effort for a Socon side who handed a debut to new signing Shane Fox, a former St Neots and Eynesbury frontman.
