ROAD race star Jamie Caldwell put in another impressive performance over the weekend to send St Ives CC top of the individual and team championships in the Eastern Road Race League.
The 90-mile Beccles Elite Road Race was held in windy conditions and was contested by Caldwell and Lee Desborough for St Ives and also included Needingworth rider Simon Hime, racing for Finchley Race Team.
Despite relentless attacks, the decisive move didn’t come until one lap to go, when the pressure on the front finally told and a breakaway group of nine riders went clear.
Both Caldwell and the hugely experienced Hime managed to get in the break but, as Desborough found himself badly positioned, he was powerless to go with the move.
Team Orbea rider Andy Lyons caught everyone napping and made a brave solo dash for the line with 1km to go and just managed to hold on to his lead.
Caldwell went for the sprint from the remaining eight-man break and just missed second spot as he comfortably rolled over the line in third place.

Hime finished in ninth and Desborough fought strongly in the main group to finish 17th.
Elsewhere, five St Ives riders contested the third category race at Great Gidding.
The team of Mick Watts, Mark Robertson, Nigel Burns, Allan Moules and Stuart Lindsey rode the hilly circuit in equally windy conditions which created many splits in the group.
Three riders had escaped alone which left St Ives battling for the lower placings.
Lindsey rode strongly as usual, spurred on by his family support crew, he was at the head of the sprint to finish seventh overall, just ahead of an excellent performance from Moules who finished in ninth.
