St Ives thrash Westwood 70-8 in final at Somersham Road

SKIPPER Ross Thompson said he was proud of St Ives after they won the Hunts and Peterborough Cup for the first time in their history on Saturday.

And they did it in emphatic fashion against fellow Midlands Four East South outfit Westwood at Somersham Road, running home 11 tries and romping to a 70-8 success in what was the final game of their season.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more from the guys, said Thompson.

“Above all, I wanted a flawless team effort and that request was answered with aplomb.

“The final scoreline is a bonus – I’d have been happy with a 3-0 win - so this puts the

icing on top.”

Bulls charged from the off and played some destructive running rugby with James Wood, twice, Josh Meadows and Stuart Cornwell all crossing the whitewash in the first half, with Cornwall nailing two conversions to put them 24-3 ahead at the break.

Then a further seven scores then came thick and fast in the second period, with just one unconverted reply from fatigued Westwood.

Wood and Meadows both went on to complete a hat-trick, Cornwell bagged another try, there was a brace for Tom Wakerley and a final try for Russell Warrington.

Cornwell, Meadows and Alex Henley (2) added conversions.
