SMASHING squash star Greg Goodwin enjoyed a fine run to the U13 final of the East Regional Championships, before being narrowly edged out by England No 2 Laurence Green.
After a comfortable 3-0 victory over Norfolk’s Will Henden in his first round match, Brampton player Goodwin, 12, then took on familiar opponent Gus Beecroft, proving too good for his Suffolk-based opponent to take a 3-0 victory.
Higher-ranked opponent Fraser Linning provided Goodwin’s challenge in the last four, but the Sports Academy star recovered from losing the first game, deservedly winning 3-1.
That set up a final showdown with Green, who took the first game. But, with some fantastic retrieval, Goodwin battled hard to win a close-fought second game to square the match.
However, that was as good as it got for a determined Goodwin, who eventually went down 3-1.
