It may have taken them 56 years, but Brampton have finally got their hands back on the Hunts Intermediate Cup.

Wayne Ambler’s side defeated Peterborough & District League Division One opposition Warboys Town 2-1 in last night’s final at Godmanchester Rovers’ David Wilson Homes Ground.

In the process they avenged a final defeat at the hands of another Peterborough & District League side, Stilton United, in the showpiece last season.

First-half goals from Ollie Vale and top-scorer Danny Cain fired Brampton into a two-goal lead, before Joe Bennett pulled one back midway through the second half to set up a nail-biting conclusion to the game.

However, Brampton held out for the win, and boss Ambler believes the final, which was attended by over 240 people, was a great spectacle.

“I thought it was a very good cup final to be honest,” he said.

“We started well and were the better side in the first half, but they dominated in the second half.”

It was Brampton’s fast start that effectively won them the game.

Winger Vale took advantage of Cain’s through ball and volleyed across goal to give Brampton a sixth-minute lead.

It got even better just 10 minutes later when clinical striker Cain received the ball with his back to goal outside the penalty area, and curled a fine strike over Luke Green in the Warboys’ net to double his side’s lead.

Despite dominating the first half, Brampton failed to find their rhythm in the second period and Michael Cafferkey came agonisingly close to halving Warboys’ arrears when he poked the ball into the side netting of Nick Parker’s goal from a corner kick.

As the game wore on, Brampton began to retreat further into their own half and were punished when Bennett peeled away from his marker to nod home Cafferkey’s long throw.

“Fair play to Warboys,” Ambler added. “They came back in the second half and played really well.

“They put us under a lot of pressure towards the end, and they put a few threatening balls into our box.”

Warboys then began to pepper Brampton penalty area with long throw-ins and crosses from wide areas, however defenders Sam Miles and Aaron Wooton dominated aerially to safely guide Brampton to glory and ensure they finally got their hands son a trophy which had eluded them for so long.
