The St Ives Boxing Academy talent followed up her recent Elite National Championships triumph with more glory when representing England in the Three Nations Championships last weekend. Whitwell, 19, beat the considerably older and more experienced Scottish champion, Lynn Caldwell with an emphatic display in Cardiff. She took control from long range in the opening round when using her jab to good effect and landing a series of hooks as 30 year-old Caldwell attempted to go on the attack. Whitwell upped the ante in the second round when forcing a standing eight count following a series of meaty combinations. And as Caldwell became all the more desperate in the closing round, Whitwell again stood firm behind a smart jab to collect another title. Shonas first season as a senior couldnt really have gone any better, said father and trainer, Steve Whitwell. I didnt expect her to develop quite so quickly, but she has already beaten the top three fighters in her division. What she has achieved is great for herself, the club and the whole area as shes the only GB boxer in the county. Whitwell now starts a three-month GB trial which will see her spending four days, every other week, at the Institute of Sport, in Sheffield. She is keen to secure sponsorship to enable her to focus on training full-time as she builds towards fulfilling her dream of fighting in the Olympic Games in the future. Any individuals or companies keen on backing Shona should contact father Steve on 07775 485186.
