St Ives fighter Tyler Goodjohn has spoken of his respect for holder Johnny Garton ahead of their huge English welterweight title showdown.

Goodjohn bids to become national champion for the second time in his career – and in a second weight division – when challenging Garton for the gold at the York Hall, in London, this Saturday night.

The two men were due to meet for a then-vacant title back in March, but Goodjohn was forced to pull out after fracturing his hand in training only days before the fight.

Garton then beat Ryan Fields to win the belt in May and now attempts to defend it for the first time against Goodjohn.

“Johnny sent me some really nice messages when I broke my hand and also when my daughter, Orlah, was born in the summer,” said Goodjohn.

“He certainly didn’t have to do either of those things.

“He’s proved he is a man of his word by fighting me for the title and he has my respect.

“I’m sure we’ll shake hands before the fight and afterwards, but we’ll certainly be trying to tear each other’s heads off in the ring.”

That last comment from Goodjohn highlights why many boxing judges are predicting a ‘fight of the year’ contender on Saturday night.

Goodjohn has been renowned for his all-action style throughout his 16-fight career, and Peckham man Garton is another fighter who has been perfectly happy to trade leather while winning 17 of his 19 pro outings to date.
