A first home show for New Saints ABC proved to be a successful occasion – in and out of the ring.

The Eaton Socon club staged a 25-bout card at their Little End Road base last Saturday and five of their own fighters triumphed.

Club chief Kev Bullus said: “All in all, it was a very successful day. We had a capacity crowd go home happy and hopefully we can stage another show sometime in spring.”

Eleven-year-olds Stanley Smith and Alfie Smith notched first career wins with split decisions against Sudbury boxers Scott Stannard and Kray Moore respectively.

Ron Belkin (11) enjoyed a fine debut when earning a unanimous decision against Michael Draper (St Ives Boxing Academy) and Nathan Buckley (15) maintained his unbeaten record by condemning Premier Swansea opponent Tusolo Williams to a first defeat.

Buckley forced two standing counts in the fight of the night and was awarded the accolade for being the best home boxer in action.

Another 15-year-old, George Pyke, impressed to beat Albert Hallday (Hockley Ring) on a unanimous decision. It was Pyke’s first victory under the New Saints banner after switching from Royston ABC.

Gareth Macey (14) looked to be on course for victory against Kacper Kosak (Peterborough Police) until a recurring knee injury forced him to retire in the second round.

Peter Chalkey (14) was stopped in the final round by Louis Thomas (Norseman ABC) after taking two standing counts, while Bobbie-Joe Stanley went down on a unanimous decision to Imran Shirazzi (Peterborough Police).

Four New Saints prospects - Bill Davis, Wally Smith, Davy Jones and Aaron Cook - all produced pleasing performances in skills bouts.
