EATON Socon Bowls Club lost out to Cambridge Abbey Bowls Club in the final of Socon's annual open tournament.

Eaton hosted 22 clubs from throughout the East Anglian region, with teams divided into two leagues, the winners of which playing each other in the final.

Eaton, represented by Kelvin Cooper, Les Jeffs and Ron Tatton got off to a flier in the final, scoring four on the first end and establishing a 9-5 lead by the fifth end.

However, Abbey's Derrick Coteman, Des Whitehead and Robby Saston responded under pressure with some accurate and forceful bowling, fighting back to level the scores at the eighth end.

Saston and Coteman sensed victory and combined to settle the game with a convincing five shot end, giving Abbey an unassailable 15-9 lead.

Abbey skip Coteman said: "We were under pressure from the start but my team fought back brilliantly to win a great tournament.
