St Neots Town boss Matt Clements is backing his side to go on another cup adventure.

Saints enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run earlier this season as they reached the fourth qualifying round of the famous competition and they have now set their sights on enjoying an exciting FA Trophy journey.

Clements’ men host fellow Southern League Premier Division side Barwell in a second qualifying round clash at the Premier Plus Stadium tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

The club have only advanced past this stage once in seven previous Trophy campaigns – that was in 2014/15 when they succumbed to an AFC Sudbury side managed by future Saints boss David Batch in a third qualifying round replay.

“We’ve had a terrific FA Cup run and we all want to progress as far as we can in the FA Trophy now,” said Clements.

“This competition is another chance to create some excitement for everyone connected with the club and also bring in more prize money.

“The fans got behind us fantastically in the FA Cup and hopefully they will turn out in force again in this competition.

“We want to excite them by playing on the front foot, going on the attack and scoring goals.

“Our better performances and better results have come in cup matches this season and we’re in decent form even though we’re not quite winning as many games as we would have liked.

“But I sense we’re starting to simmer and hopefully we will come to the boil in the coming games.”

Saints banked £3,250 for seeing off Matlock Town 1-0 in the previous round of the Trophy and another £4,000 is up for grabs this Saturday. They pocketed £30,000 for their FA Cup exploits.

But Barwell, who are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions, look set to provide a stern test.

Clements added: “We produced a good performance to beat Matlock in the previous round and hopefully we can now pass the next challenge provided by Barwell.

“I had a chat with the Coalville gaffer when we played them in the league last weekend about Barwell and picked up a bit of info on them. They are strong, powerful and try to play quickly from back to front by all accounts.

“We’ve encountered that a few times lately with teams from that Leicestershire and Midlands area, but the crucial thing is ensuring our performance is right.

“If we play to the level we can, we will have a very good chance of winning the tie.”

Saints are without full-back Johnny Herd due to suspension after he was harshly dismissed in a 1-1 league draw at Coalville last Saturday.
