DISABLED sportsmen and women are being encouraged to take up the Paralympic sport of Boccia at Huntingdon Leisure Centre.
Weekly sessions are held at the centre on Saturday mornings, and have already attracted a core group of players, but organiser Shaun McCormick said the sessions were open to players of all levels of experience.
Similar to bocce, a member of the petanque family, boccia was originally designed for wheelchair athletes but is now open to all disabled athletes. Players use coloured leather balls delivered to a target ball, or jack, with points awarded for the closest balls. Played by individuals, pairs or triples, it is a mixed gender sport and players compete against others with a similar level of disability.
McCormick said: “There is a nice social atmosphere at the Saturday morning sessions, and all the players enjoy it. However, it can also become very competitive for those who like to play team sport.
The newly formed Huntingdon club, Camboccia Scorpions, have entered the national league which starts in the autumn.
