St Ives

A FANTASTIC game saw St Ives U15s pip rivals Biggleswade by a single point at Somersham Road at the weekend.

Despite trailing 17-5 at half time, St Ives staged a remarkable comeback to squeeze home 26-25 thanks to a late conversion attempt coming back off the upright.

Liam Cooke cancelled out an early Biggleswade try with an effort in the corner but the visitors dominated the remainder of the first period, establishing a healthy lead at the interval.

Andrew Howard set up Tino Zicchi to start the fightback, before adding the conversion himself.

Captain Tom Mulqueen was next to get involved, setting up Matt Bligh to score from a quickly-taken penalty.

Biggleswade rallied but Bligh pounced on a loose ball to put Saints in front and man of the match Howard's conversion proved crucial as the post denied the visitors late on.

Saints U16s came out on top of a tight contest at Ely, winning by 22 points to 17. James Wood, Steve Hehir, Matt Nice and Dan Bainbridge all scored tries with Dan Breed adding a conversion in his second match back after serious injury. Simon Dunn picked up the man of the match award.

Jake Bowen was among the tries as St Ives U9s lost one and drew one in a triangular tournament with St Neots and Ely. Peter Ford also crossed the line as Saints defeated Ely but lost out to their neighbours from down the Great Ouse.

St Neots

SAINTS U11s earned an impressive 14-0 win against Ely, before repeating the trick against local rivals St Ives. Curtis Bundy and Cameron Horn each scored tries with Ben Tyler crossing the line twice. Lewis Medlow converted four times to help secure the victories.

Meanwhile, St Neots U17s continued their excellent recent form, defeating St Ives for their seventh consecutive victory.

Richard North scored the first try for the home side, pegging back a first-half visiting score before Jonny Berwick and Phil Sandling crossed the line. Dave Kingsbury superbly converted to earn his side a 17-7 triumph.
