Jordan Gill is out to deliver his best performance to date in his biggest fight so far.
The Chatteris talent does battle in front of the live television cameras this Sunday night when facing Jason Cunningham in a British featherweight title eliminator.
Gill, 23, puts his perfect 18-fight record on the line against an older and more experienced opponent, who is a two-time Commonwealth champion, but he is not in the least bit fazed by the size of the task that awaits him on the JDNXTGEN show at Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.
Cunningham was won 23 of his 27 fights – six of them by knockout - although the 28 year-old from Doncaster goes into this clash on the back of a defeat to highly-rated Reece Bellotti last time out.
“I’ve been waiting for this night – and a breakthrough fight – for five years,” said Gill.
“It’s the biggest fight of my career so far, I’m feeling better than ever and I know I can bring the win home to Fenland.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for my opponent. He’s been there and done it. He’s a two-time Commonwealth champion and belts like that aren’t just handed out.
“I’m slight favourite with the bookies, but a lot of people in the industry think it is a toss-up fight.
“He has a lot of things – age, experience, height, reach – in his favour, but I’m confident I can do a number on him. I know how good I am.
“I haven’t been tested yet but that is guaranteed to happen on Sunday and it will bring out the best in me.
“If I win this fight I’m a somebody, but if I get beaten I’m another bum.
“I could potentially come back from a first defeat, but that’s not a scenario I’m considering.”
The British crown is currently held by Norfolk fighter Ryan Walsh. The Cromer man retained the belt following a split draw against Isaac Lowe last weekend.
The JDNXTGEN show is being screened live from 7pm on Sky Sports and that will serve as an extra incentive for Gill.
And he is also determined to put on a show for more than 100 supporters who will be present in Manchester. George Munns and C & G Coaches are laying on transport for them.
“Let’s face it, no-one wants to get beaten up on TV,” added Gill ahead of his third outing under trainer Dave Coldwell. “It’s great to be fighting live on Sky and it’s important I show everyone what I’m about.
“It’s also brilliant to have so many people behind me. I can’t thank them enough for travelling three-and-a-half hours on a Sunday night and I’ll do everything I can to make sure their journey is worthwhile.”
