Big occasions for two Eaton Socon teams in the chase for honours

They will kick-off three points behind their hosts, who topped the table on goal difference from championship favourites Great Shelford ahead of the latter team’s scheduled fixture last night (Tuesday).

And Spavins is convinced his Socon men have the class to collect a victory which would keep them firmly in the hunt for honours.

He said: “We’ve got six games to go and the pressure is going up a notch each week. The Fulbourn game is one we have to win and I’m confident we can do it.

“We lost to them very early in the season when we were still getting settled as a side so I’m not taking any notice of that result.

“It’s a great achievement just to be involved in the title race at this stage of the season.

“We’d obviously love to go all the way and win it, but whatever we achieve this season, we will better it next season.”

Socon claimed a slice of revenge last Saturday when easing to a 3-0 success against Over Sports a fortnight after slipping up against them in the reverse fixture.

It was a victory capped by the first senior goal of Shaun Flack’s career – and it was a strike well worth the wait.

The full-back swapped passes with Scott Kingsbury before tucking away a smart finish with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

Ryan Whittingham had earlier made the breakthrough in the first half before Ryan Baxter doubled Socon’s lead just after the hour.

Eaton Socon Reserves have a big date of their own tomorrow night (Thursday) when involved in the Creake Charity Shield final.
