REVENGE was sweet for St Ives Boxing Club’s Hayden Beasley after he finally set the record straight against Wesley Clarke at the Mid-Anglia Senior Novice ABA Championships in Peterborough on Wednesday.

The pair squared off once more in the light heavyweight class B final, with Beasley still smarting from his disputed points loss against the Fulbourne BC fighter at Burgess Hall a fortnight earlier.

But this time there was no mistake as classy Beasley out scored his opponent and took the bout - and the title - on a majority decision.

The Ives fighter had boxed a much smarter fight, paced himself perfectly over the four rounds and, although he was slightly behind at the halfway mark against Clarke’s counter-punching, Beasley always looked in control.

It left him with plenty in the tank for a strong finish and everything rested on the last round.

Beasley picked up the pace and started landing strong hooks, which caught the eye of the judges, and meant he finished much the stronger of the two.

He now progresses to the Eastern County Finals starting on Saturday and will be joined by Jesse Smith and Bradley Chapman, who got first round byes in the under 63.5k and under 67k class B categories, respectively.

Of the club’s other fighters scheduled to take part in Peterborough, Tom Maguire and Mark Cade both had to withdraw through injury.

Teerso Sugden tasted defeat at the hands of Arena ABC fighter Ritchie Januszek., though he showed promise for the future in only his third bout.

• Campol’s Toby Herbert showed he is a boxer with a bright future despite defeat to Mark Bosley of Far Cotton ABC at a Northampton show. Against a more experienced boxer, he gave his best performance of the year, and showed stamina to take the final round. He will look to turn that promise into victory at a Norwich show on Friday.

A week earlier, at Leicester Railwaymen’s ABC, Campol boxers chalked up a win and a loss. Liam Melanie was impressive as he saw off Rick Everitt by taking all three rounds of a tough contest, but Michael Bevan struggled to deal with the aggression of Rob Whike, who forced a second-round stoppage.
