Huntingdon teenager Hannah Milton has booked her place in the finals of the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport National Championships, where she will represent the eastern region and Cambridge Regional College at badminton.
The 17-year-old sport studies student, who is the first from the college to reach the badminton finals, fought off stiff competition from colleges across the region to
qualify for the national champion-ships, which take place at the University of Nottingham from April 21-23.
She will compete against athletes from colleges across England and Wales, with all competitors aiming for individual and team glory.
Through the event, the teams will be aiming to accumulate points for their region and win the prestigious Wilkinson Sword trophy.
Hannah, a former county player, will play in the singles, doubles and mixed tournaments.
“I’ve played badminton since I was 10 and have been trying to get back into it lately, so reaching the finals is a fantastic boost,” she said.
Neil Andrews, Hannah’s tutor at the college, said: “We’re so pleased that Hannah has qualified for the National Championships - she is the first from our college to represent us in badminton. Hannah has shown she has a real talent and we are sure she will do herself and the college proud.”
AoC Sport managing director, Marcus Kingwell, said: “We are really excited about this year’s National Championships, which will be hosted at state-of-the-art facilities in Nottingham.
“Ours will be the first major multi-sports event to take place at the David Ross Sports Village, and we believe the standard of the facilities will provide students with an incredible experience.
“We could even see a future Olympic champion in action at the championships.”
The AoC Sport National Championships, now in their 39th year, are the largest student sporting event in the UK, with nearly 1,800 students taking part. Colleges compete in 13 different sports over three days.
