The 25th anniversary staging of the St Ives 10k attracted a record entry last Sunday.

Race founder Bruce Hobday sent the 700 runners on their way from the One Leisure Outdoor Centre - and Peterborough AC man Ben Heron was the quickest of them.

He took victory in 34.01 with runner-up Phil Martin (34.18) and third-placed John Pike (34.37) completing a clean sweep of the podium places for that club.

Georgina Schwiening, of Cambridge & Coleridge, was the leading lady in 35.50 with locally-based Great Britain duathlon international Jess Williams the third female finisher (40.23).

Riverside Runners man Neil Shorten was the leading local in 14th position, with David Hudson leading the Huntingdon BRJ challenge in 19th.

Freddie Minney (Riverside) and Andrew Brett (Ramsey Road Runners) also finished in the top 25 - Minney was completing a 10k event for the first time.

Three Riverside entrants - Maurice Hemmingway (M60), Claire Jenkins (F40) and Barbara Reading (F70) - won age-group accolades, while Ali Cooper was the second finisher in the F50 category.

BRJ also collected a host of podium finishers with Steve McNicoll (3rd M55), David Newton (3rd M65), Jackie Wren (1st F55) and Alison Orrell (3rd F50) all impressing.

The BRJ club's youngsters also impressed when securing nine podium finishes in the accompanying 3k fun run.

That haul included age-group successes for James Orrell, who pipped clubmate Keelan Duffy in the Under 15 boys' section, and Ellie Loosely, who won the Under 13 girls' bracket after finishing second overall.

The St Ives 10k is organised by Hunts AC, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.
