FATHER-and-son duo Steve and Ricky Ashwell are tied at the top of the Wednesday series with a month to run.

The pair have dominated recently and although the match was close, they again finished first and second last week. Ricky won from peg five with 28lb 4oz, with Steve second from peg thre with 23lb 8oz and Ian Benton third from peg nine.

Saturday Sweepstake

IAN Benton had a lovely catch to win Saurday’s sweepstake, weighing in 66lb of tench, bream and carp.

Tony Watling was second, just ounces in front of Graeme Worker, with Steve Ashwell fourth.

Godmanchester Junior Match

THE traditional junior fishing match was held for the first time in many years on Saturday, June 26.

Organised by the Community Association, 23 youngsters took part and enjoyed the experience, though the hot weather was not ideal for catching.

The match was won by Charlie Bavester with 1lb 9oz with Kiah-Marie Macadam taking the girls’ prize and Max Hayes the boys’. Charlie was presented with the new Community Shield after the match which she will hold for a year. It is hoped the match will again become a regular feature, upholding the local tradition enjoyed by generations.

RESULT: 1. Match Winner – Charlie Bavester 1lb 9oz

Girls Section – Kiah-Marie Macadam 1lb 3oz

Boys Section – Max Hayes 15oz

RAMSEY AS

PAUL and Andrew Kilby drew the two end pegs and duly finished first and second in the Thursday evening match fished at Staffurths Bridge.

RESULT: 1. Paul Kilby 11lb 6oz, 2. Andrew Kilby 7lb 8oz, 3. George Coles 6lb 8oz.

Sunday’s running-line-only match on the low numbers on the Forty Foot was won again by Ivan Steels, last year’s victor with 9lb 9oz. Paul Kilby was second, Tony Hudson third and youngster Lewis Martin fourth.

RESULT: 1. Ivan Steels 9lb 9oz, 2. Paul Kilby 8lb 1oz, 3. Tony Hudson 7lb 2oz, 4. Lewis Martin 4lb.

On Saturday, Ramsey fish in the Division Two National on the Erewash Canal which has been difficult in practice.

ST IVES AS

THURSDAY’S Coote Cup match was fished in A section.

With the river clear again, although there were many roach fry, no proper roach showed with the target species perch and tench. Tony McGregor was the winner with 7lb 5oz.

RESULT: 1. Tony McGregor 7lb 5oz, 2. Paul Ashcroft 5lb 14oz, 3. Paul Milburn 2lb.

McGregor also won Sunday’s match with a tench, bream and 2lb 6oz rudd for 12lb 8oz.

BENWICK AC

JON Hazelden caught three tench and some eels to weigh in 11lb 11oz and win Sundays match at Copalder.

WATERBEACH JUNIOR MATCH

CHLOE Easey is following in the family footsteps and she showed the boys how to catch fish when she weighed in 61lb 8oz in Wednesday evening’s junior match on Magpie Lake at Waterbeach.

In second place was David Mayo with 38lb 8oz and in third Zak Osbourne with 37lb 8oz.

RESULT: 1. Chloe Easey 61lb 8oz, 2. David Mayo 38lb 8oz, 3. Zak Osbourne 37lb 8oz

MANDERSON TRUST

VINNEY Easey won both the matches last weekend. Annie’s Shield, fished on Saturday, saw difficult conditions with the winning weight only 5lb 10oz.

RESULT: 1. Vinney Easey 5lb 10oz, 2. Paula Last 4lb, 3. Geoff Lofty 2lb 11oz.

The match on Sunday was the Marshalls match, which attracted a tremendous turn-out of 22 anglers. Easey fished mainly paste to amass 45lb, well ahead of the second and third placed anglers.

RESULT: 1. Vinney Easey 45lb, 2. John Hemmington 24lb 13oz, 3. Willy Williams 22lb 12oz.
