Kev Bullus pumped his life savings into the launch of New Saints ABC in Little End Road, Eaton Socon, little more than a year ago.

And it has proved to be an inspired decision with wife, Joanna, and son, Jordan, helping him make it a big success.

“Things are going very well,” said Bullus snr. “We now have 16 competing boxers ranging in age from 11 to 27 – and a few more will be ready to step into the ring by the spring.

“It’s demanding but satisfying and I certainly don’t have any regrets. It is just nice to be able to give local kids the chance to train and compete in their home town.

“We’re putting the finishing touches to an extension at the gym and hopefully we’re starting to put the St Neots area back on the boxing map. It’s been waiting for 15 years.”

There was a previous boxing club in St Neots which ran from the early 1970s to 2001, when the town’s old youth centre burned down.

New Saints are teaming up with Trumpington ABC to host their first amateur show early in the new year.

Several of the club’s own fighters will appear at the January 21 event, with Bullus hopeful of attracting boxers from clubs across the region.

Three New Saints youngsters have recently been in action.

Gareth Macey (13) had a unanimous verdict against Skegness opponent Kwasi Appiah at a show in Chatteris.

Nathan Buckley (14) stopped Alfie Giles of Rayne ABC in the second round at a show in Harwich while Peter Chalkley (14) was on the wrong end of a split decision at the same event.
