Eynesbury Rovers Reserves manager Mark Spavins admits he couldn’t quite believe what he saw last Saturday.
His side came from 2-1 down to triumph 8-3 at Foxton in the Kershaw Premier Division with seven goals in the final half-an-hour.
It was a result which lifted the Rovers second string into seventh place in the Cambridgeshire County League top flight, but Spavins insists that the game was a much closer affair than the scoreline suggests.
“We were lucky to be honest, their striker had an open goal to finish us off at 2-1 but he put it out for a throw-in,” said Spavins. “They should have been out of sight at half-time.
“We then went 3-2 up and they started to throw extra men forward, gaps started to appear, and the floodgates opened.
“The last 30 minutes paper over the cracks a bit, but overall I can’t complain because we’ve scored seven in half-an-hour and we’ve got three points against a side that were in the top three at the start of play.”
Rovers were level at half-time thanks to a Shane Fox penalty, the first successful spot-kick in seven attempts for Spavins’ side this season.
Fox struck again after half-time, whilst Dean Parratt and Lee Bassett both hit doubles, with Ryan Baxter and Josh Spavins also getting their names on the scoresheet.
Next up for Rovers Reserves is a derby date at a Brampton side who have lost three of their last four league games. Their latest defeat arrived last Saturday when they went down 2-0 to title challengers Great Shelford despite seeing goalkeeper Jordan Porter save a hotly-contested penalty.
Spavins added: “Brampton won’t let us off the hook like Foxton did. In fact I can’t remember the last time I beat them as a manager.
“They’re defensively strong, they’ve got players that can hurt us all over the park and they always want to win. If their manager rung me up and offered me a point now, I think I would take it.”
A sole Tom Baxter goal gave Eaton Socon a 1-0 victory against title-chasing West Wratting last Saturday while Hemingfords United picked up a vital victory against fellow strugglers St Neots Town Reserves in a survival battle.
Matt Wright (back from a brief spell at Huntingdon Town), Nick Cade and player-boss Cameron Anderson hit the Hemingfords goals during what the latter described as a ‘dominant display’.
Dan Davidson proved to be an able deputy in goal for Hemingfords with regular keeper Tomasz Kulik missing due to illness.
