The Cambridgeshire Golf Team had a successful day at the opening match of the Anglia League Season.

Held at Ramsey Golf Club, the A Team of Cambridgeshire golfers faced off against Norfolk.

The first two foursomes matches were Danny Loveday and Teddy Hall / Tom Burgh and Chris Handy, who went the way of Norfolk one up and four and three respectively.

Playing next were the elite junior players, Oliver Toyer and Sam Marshall, who were never down from the start of the match.

With one bogey and a few birdies, they finished as winners with five and four.

In the final grouping, county captain Nick Smits and the 'Ramsey guru', Paul Hodgkin, both got off to a nice start with a birdie on the first hole.

Hodgkin holed an impressive 15ft putt for the win. An eagle on the 10th hole got the Cambridgeshire pairing to four up, and they eventually won five and three.

By lunch, it was 2-2. The singles started with Teddy Hall, who was never down, and he won one up.

Hodgkin made a fighting halve, as he was down most of the match and lipped out for a birdie on the 17th hole.

He was one up going into the 18th hole, but a birdie from Norfolk meant Cambridgeshire halved the match.

Oliver Toyer never looked back, and won a convincing seven and six, which included five birdies and twelve putts.

Sam Marshall won five and hour, while Chris Handy birdied the sixth, chipped in for a birdie on the 10th, and remained one down.

He birdied the 14th and 16th holes to stay even, and an impressive 20ft hole out on the 17th and a halve on the 18th meant he finished the match all square on the 18th.

Losses followed for Danny loveday two and one, and Tom Burgh three and one.

It was left to Captain Smits to halve his match to mean that Cambridgeshire won the singles 4.5- 2.5. The overall match score was 6.5-5.5.

Graham Goodman, director of county teams, said: "After an unbeaten preseason the team got off to an excellent thrilling start to the Anglia Season.

"The team pulled together and fought for a victory. Next up is the next Anglia fixture vs Suffolk at Ely Golf Club."
