Match Report: Huntingdonshire FA Lower Junior Cup Final - Houghton & Wyton 4 - Alconbury Weston 1.

Formed less than a year ago Alconbury Weston reached their first county cup final but found it a step too far against a side that are two grades higher.

However, their achievement in reaching this final cannot be understated and despite the final scoreline they acquitted themselves creditable against their higher graded opponents.

To their credit, they looked the fitter side in the later stages of this final and it was only the woodwork that prevented the final score from being closer.

Houghton opened the scoring in their first significant attack after seven minutes when Adam Kay netted from close range. Alconbury hit back swiftly and four minutes later the scores were level when a free kick from Ketan Gardner took a deflection to level the scores.

For a while the exchanges were even but after 27 minutes Dan Williams restored the Houghton lead with a goal from a narrow angle. The remainder of the first half was even.

A goal just two minutes after the interval from Dan Attfield put Houghton in control. For a spell they dominated possession and eventually after 72 minutes a fourth goal set up by Sonny Rumbold for Lloyd Schwier gave them a comfortable cushion and a 4-1 lead.

That signalled a spirited fightback by Alconbury who had the better of the last 15 minutes but the nearest to a late comeback was a shot eight minutes from time that rebounded from the woodwork.
