St Ives Swimming Club (SISC) have stormed to victory in the first round of the Senior Fenland League, blitzing the competition to register 30 wins from a possible 43 events.

During a competitive evening full of tenacious swimming, the St Ives swimmers proved too strong for March Marlins and Mildenhall Swimming Club, backing up their 30 wins with 10 second and two third placings.

A spokesperson for SISC said: "It was a decisive, definitive and dynamic display of aquatic ability by all the club participants who acquitted themselves with distinction and determination throughout the evening.

"A great night yet again by our athletes."

SISC hosted the first round of the senior meet, which included swimmers aged 10, 12, 14 and under, and open senior swimmers aged 15 years plus, all competing in 50-100 metre events.

Peterborough Swimming Club had to withdraw from the competition, which left the three clubs to battle it out at One Leisure St Ives on June 24.

The spokesperson added: "A stimulating and utterly dynamic evening of aquatic sporting entertainment ensued with a packed viewing gallery of club families and supporters all urging their teams onwards and upwards."

St Ives athletes started magnificently from the outset, hurling themselves into each race to gain maximum points for themselves and their teammates.

As the evening progressed, they built further and greater on their starting gains, eventually finishing on 196 points, 34 points ahead of March Marlins, who finished on 162 points.

The result outlines the strides made by SISC swimmers, building on the success of the Junior Fenland League two weeks previously.
