New Saints Boxing Clubs' Tobias Taylor has won a third successive national title following a sensational performance at the England Boxing National Junior Championships.

The 14-year-old boxer from St Neots was crowned the national champion in Wigan following a split-decision victory against Warrington's Harvey Turner of Phoenix Fire Amateur Boxing Club.

Both met in the final of the competition on March 26, and England Boxing Performance Pathway coaches voted their thrilling fight as the male bout of the tournament in the Under 80kg open class category.

New Saints Boxing Club's chairman and trainer, Kev Bullus, said: "It's a huge achievement.

"To win one national title is considered good going for these young boxers, but to win three years on the bounce on top of winning a European title last year as well, it's superb for a 14-year-old."

The championships have been running since the 1930s, and the likes of Amir Khan, David Haye, and Anthony Ogogo have all cut their teeth by becoming junior champions before making their names on the senior stage.

Kev added: "Obviously, he's got a very bright future ahead of him."

Before the final bout, Taylor overcame 15-year-old Reece Smith (Aycliffe Amateur Boxing Club, County Durham) in the semi-final on March 25.

Turner had scored a stunning one-punch finish in his semi-final to set up the clash with Taylor, and a large crowd was in attendance to cheer on the match.

Taylor quickly established control from centre-ring, forcing Turner onto the back foot in an evenly contested first two rounds.

The third round proved decisive, as Taylor went through the gears, forcing two standing counts in a sensational finish, and was crowned champion via a points decision.

"The thing I would like to say about him, and for people who think he just sort of gets in there and does it, is what a good trainer he is, how hard he works and the hours of training he puts in," said Kev.

"It's not just come to him easily; he has earnt it."

Tobias will now represent England this summer, firstly in a tri-nation event in Scotland, before jetting out to Romania to defend his title in the European Junior Championships in July.
