HUNTINGDONSHIRE Fencing Club members enjoyed a mixed start to the 2010-11 season at the Essex Open at the weekend.

Saturday saw the foilists in action at the Colchester tournament, with father-and-son duo Ian and Josh Coates in action. Ian finished outside the last 64, but Josh battled through to get within sight of the last 32. However, he was denied at the last and went down 15-12 to finish 33rd.

In the Women’s Foil competition, Tracey Coates achieved the highest finish of the Hunts fencers. Ranked 17 going into the direct elimination rounds, she progressed easily to the last 32 where she met the number 16 seed, an opponent against whom she had had little success in the past.

Her opponent prevailed once again in a 15-7 win, leaving Coates in 17th place.

Sunday saw two of the club’s epeeists in action with George Partridge missing out at the last 64 stage, and Matt Dalton fencing into the last 32 round to finish 29th.
